Anthony Ray Hinton, author of The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life, Freedom, and Justice, spent 30 years on death row in Alabama for a crime he did not commit.
Through the tireless efforts of Mr. Hinton, his lawyer Bryan Stevenson, and the team at the Equal Justice Initiative, Mr. Hinton was finally released from prison in 2015. Since his release, Mr. Hinton has traveled the world sharing his story of hope and resilience. He is a staunch advocate for the abolition of the death penalty.
Catholic Mobilizing Network co-hosted his keynote address at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD this February in honor of Black History Month.
Mr. Hinton spoke directly to the students in attendance when he concluded his remarks. He implored them to continue the fight for justice, especially working towards the abolition of the death penalty. He encouraged them to vote, and consider entering a career in politics — to be the change they want to see in the world.
CMN staff was privileged to travel to Mount St. Mary's University for this event. Staff members Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, Emmjolee Mendoza Waters, and Moira Greaney met with Mr. Hinton, university students, and local community members.
